Hey Reader!
We're not all full-time travellers here, so let me know if this rings a bell:
You maybe take a few trips a year as a travel content creator, and your travel content typically lasts you a few weeks before you fall into that "Uh okay I'm all outta things to say about this trip" content drought.
Sound familiar? ๐
I see you, I feel you LOL but there are actually a ton of ways you can remain consistent and inspired when you're in-between trips as a content creator.
-
First things first: Plan to stretch your travel content out as much as you can. This doesn't mean creating a ton of content just for the sake of it, but planning your content ideas ahead of time.
- This can be done in a formal brainstorming session, but honestly? My best ideas come to me either in the moment on my trip, or at random times before and after. I keep all of my content ideas (fully formed or simple thoughts I have) in the Notes app on my phone and write them down as soon as they come to me. This is my arsenal of content ideas that my future self thanks my past self for literally DAILY.
-
If you want to have a few fully-formed content ideas planned, take a look at your travel itinerary before you leave and do a braindump of all of the possible content opportunities that may come up. For example, say you're planning on spending a week in London over Christmas:
- Maybe you decide that you'll be visiting several locations to see the Christmas lights in the city, and you want to create a series showcasing each one. That could easily be 5-10 pieces of content alone, especially if you decide to include funny/relatable moments or thoughts you have about visiting London this time of year.
- Now, you'll also assumedly be staying somewhere and eating at multiple restaurants during your week-long trip. If you decide to showcase the accommodation, a price breakdown of your week, restaurant experiences, how the trip made you feel, a reel to inspire and educate your community about visiting this busy destination during Christmastime, that can easily be another 10 pieces of content.
- So we're up to 20 possible pieces of content, which, if you post 4-5 times a week, will last you an entire month!
-
Once you've gotten your core travel content ideas sorted and posted, if you start to run out of ideas, it's time to take a look at your insights!
- Long watch time - use those first clips that caught your audience's attention (also your most visually appealing clips)
- Most shares, likes or saves - use the same messaging with different b-roll footage (you can absolutely use clips you've used before, or new, simply video content)
- Look at your comment section! Are there any comments or questions you can turn into a piece of content to serve your community and answer the actual questions they're asking??
- When in doubt, you can absolutely re-post the same reel from a few months back that performed well and communicates your key messaging and offers solid value. No one will care, I promise!!
-
This could be a good time to experiment with content and explore your hometown!
- There is something to be said for sharing day-to-day content to help your community get to know you. This can be on stories or in-feed! For example: show yourself planning future trips, use your day-to-day to ask your audience questions about how you can help them, share products you've been loving etc.
- If you're known for creating travel content, consider sharing spots in your hometown, give an insider's perspective on your area, or use this time to practice your travel content creation for brand/hotel partnerships
- Book a staycation at a local hotel or book a local tour and share your experience! Keep in mind that you can create multiple pieces of content out of one experience, so one night at a hotel or one guided tour can get you a ton of content if you plan it out accordingly!
The takeaway here is that content doesn't have to be complex. A simple idea can turn into a great piece of content, and you don't always have to be coming up with something new! You can repurpose, you can re-post, you can REPEAT yourself. No one will call the content police, in fact, it'll actually help solidify your messaging to your community and make your content more recognizable.
โจ So this is your permission slip to repurpose, repost and repeat yourself. Experiment with your content and don't let those in-between-trip content lulls get you down! You've got this โจ
I'm entering an in-between-trips season, so if you're feeling that lull and feeling uninspired, feel free to reach out and we can workshop some ideas to get you through until your next trip!
